Solar + Storage + Virtual Power Plant

Own your power. Then get paid for it.

dcentral.energy installs solar and battery storage that pays for itself — then connects your system to thousands of others as a virtual power plant, so your rooftop earns like infrastructure. Plain numbers, honest payback, no sales theatre.

The estimate takes about half a minute. Every assumption is editable, and the math is published on this page — if you can't verify it, you shouldn't have to trust it.

Plain English: the second-life system costs ₹1.45 L less upfront and breaks even 1.8 years sooner, but its battery gets replaced around year 6 — that cost is already included in every number above. New packs cost more and run ~12 years. Lowest upfront: second-life. Fewest replacements: new. Both come out ahead.

How the math works — every formula, in the open

Solar savings

kWp × sun-hours × 365 = kWh/year

Every unit your roof generates is a unit you don't buy from the grid, so yearly savings = generation × your tariff (/kWh). Panels degrade ~0.5% per year and tariffs historically rise 3–4% per year — both are applied every year, and both are editable above.

Battery savings

kWh × depth-of-discharge × 90% efficiency = usable kWh per cycle

A battery earns by storing cheap or solar energy and using it when grid power is expensive or absent. We assume ~320 cycles/year and value each shifted unit at 35% of your tariff — a deliberately conservative "value factor" you can change. New packs cycle at 90% depth-of-discharge; second-life packs at 80%.

EMI

P × r × (1+r)ⁿ / ((1+r)ⁿ − 1)

The standard reducing-balance formula every bank uses. P is system cost after subsidy, r is the monthly interest rate, n the number of months.

Break-even & the chart

cumulative savings − system cost, year by year

The chart starts at −(what you paid) and climbs as savings accumulate. Where a line crosses zero is break-even. Battery replacement at end of life (~12 yrs new, ~6 yrs second-life) is subtracted in the year it happens — no hiding it.

Subsidy (India, residential)

₹30,000/kWp up to 2 kWp + ₹18,000 for the 3rd kWp, capped at ₹78,000

PM Surya Ghar rules, applied automatically. Toggle it off in advanced if you prefer.

None of this is secret, and it never should be. What makes the estimate good isn't the formulas — it's honest input prices, which we update from real installer quotes. A site survey turns this estimate into a firm number.

The bigger picture

A power plant with a million owners.

A virtual power plant (VPP) links thousands of home and business batteries into one coordinated grid resource. When the grid is stressed, the network discharges together — and every owner gets paid. That software layer, including settlement and payments, is what we are building.

STEP 01

Install

Solar + BESS sized with the calculator above, installed by our vetted partners at the price you saw — new or second-life, your call.

STEP 02

Connect

Your system joins the dcentral VPP network. It keeps serving your home first; spare capacity becomes grid capacity.

STEP 03

Earn

Grid events, peak shaving, and energy trading generate revenue. Settlement is transparent and automatic — you see every unit and every payment.

VPP software layer in development

Fleet orchestration, dispatch, metering, and transparent settlement — the operating system for a grid owned by its users.

VPP payments & settlement in development

Automatic, auditable payouts for every kWh your system contributes. If you can’t verify it, you shouldn’t have to trust it.

Why second-life

A battery’s second act is storage.

EV batteries retire with 70–80% of their capacity left. For a car, that’s the end. For a wall in your garage, that’s a decade of useful storage at roughly half the price. We certify, repack, and warranty second-life packs — and the calculator above never hides the trade-off: cheaper upfront, shorter life, replacement priced in.
